I like the approch except I think you may be ignoring the incredible power of compound interest by not saving enough while young is a mistake. When you earn interest on savings, that interest then earns interest on itself and this amount is compounded over and over again.

As Albert Einstein once said “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it; he who doesn't, pays it.”
